Shop Dada – The Cornershop That Built Us
This film is currently private doing its festival circuit.
Shop Dada: The Cornershop That Built Us follows filmmaker Darshan Gajjar as he retraces the journey of his grandfather, Pravin Mistry, a Gujarati man displaced from Uganda. Like many others, he rebuilt his life through corner shops across Britain - businesses often reduced to a familiar South Asian stereotype. Decades later, visiting his grandfather’s first shop, Darshan uncovers the untold stories of family, sacrifice, and survival behind that stereotype. From 1980s racism to today’s rising hostility, the film reflects on how migration, class, and inherited resilience shaped both family and filmmaker alike.
