Gurkha - The Untold Truth

Feature length documentary / 1 hour 30 minutes. (Production In Progress)

Nayungma interviewing a Gurkha veteran, capturing a personal account of his experiences

The Story

Nayungma always knew her father was a Gurkha, which brought her from Nepal to the UK at the age of six. But understanding what that truly meant was a different journey altogether.

Nayungma always knew her father was a Gurkha, which brought her from Nepal to the UK at the age of six. But understanding what that truly meant was a different journey altogether.

As she embarks on a deeply personal quest of self-discovery, Nayungma uncovers the truth behind the Gurkhas—a community celebrated as elite, disciplined, and fearless soldiers who vow their lives to the Queen (now King). But beyond the myths of heroism, she learns they are human—scared, struggling, and burdened by systemic injustices.

For over 200 years, Gurkhas have fought for Britain, but many now live in poverty, battling racism, pension inequalities, and separation from their families. The very nation they served has overlooked their sacrifices, and their voices remain unheard.

Why This Film Matters

This documentary isn’t just about war heroes—it’s about human beings whose stories have been lost to history. By giving a platform to Gurkha veterans and their families, we aim to confront the harsh realities of inequality, discrimination, and governmental neglect.

We are on a mission to document Nepali history that hasn’t been recorded by the West, offering a space for Nepali people to speak for themselves—telling their stories, their struggles, and their truths.

This film is not only for those who fought but for the next generation of Nepali children growing up in the UK. It’s about helping them understand their roots, their identity, and the legacy of sacrifice that brought them here.

Many Gurkha veterans are aging and passing away. If we don’t record their voices now, these stories risk being lost forever. This is our last chance to document a history that must not be forgotten.

Our Journey & How You Can Help

We began this journey using our own funds, driven by a passion to bring this untold story to life. We’ve been filming in the UK, interviewing Gurkha veterans and their families. But to complete this project, we need support for:

  • Travel & Accommodation – To reach veterans across the UK and in Nepal.

  • Filming Costs – Hiring crew, renting equipment, and securing interview locations.

  • Post-Production – Editing, sound design, translation, and subtitles.

  • Archival Footage & Licensing – To bring historical context to the narrative.

With your support, we can ensure this story is told with the authenticity, quality, and urgency it deserves.

From the Director

This is my first feature documentary, and I am fully dedicated to directing, shooting, and editing it. My journey as a filmmaker has always been about amplifying marginalized voices and uncovering hidden histories. This film is deeply personal to me, and I believe it’s a story that needs to be told—now more than ever.

We are currently self-funding this project but are actively raising funds to support its continuation. If you believe in the importance of this story, please support us by following our journey and spreading the word.
